SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

Santiago de Compostela, famous pilgrimage  destination of Saint James´ Way, has been a university city since 1495 with a great cultural heritage. It is the capital of Galicia, region in the northwest of Spain, known for its unique traditions and beautiful landscapes.

Saint James´s Way (Camino de Santiago) is the most ancient pilgrimage route in Europe with more than 300,000 people a year travelling to this destiny on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The Old Town of Santiago de Compostela, World Heritage Site since 1985, is one of the most beautiful urban areas in the world with many Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque monuments grouped around the Cathedral. 

There are a large number of restaurants, especially in the Old Town, with specialties such as seafood, empanadas (stuffed pies), Santiago almond cake,… which can be accompanied by Galician wines.

HOW TO GET THERE

Santiago de Compostela international airport is 10 km from the city (15 minutes by car). Other nearby airports are in A Coruña (50 minutes by car) and Vigo (1 h by car).

Long-distance daily trains link up with Madrid, with Vitoria and with Barcelona. Changing train once, there is a daily service to Bilbao, Portugal and Paris, as well as nearly all of Spain’s main cities.
